Topic: Shirl's sweet peas

Shirl and Tone came to see me at the allotments this morning and gave me this bunch of sweet peas.



I've never seen sweet peas like them before - someone even asked me if they were real!  Shirl knew the name of every variety in the bunch and gave us a few tips on how to grow them.  Can't imagine I would ever get them like this though.

I'm sitting here next to a vaseful grown from seeds sent by Shirl- they are gorgeous, aren't they! I thought my perennial ones had a strong scent until I grew these!

So do I. It's one of my favourites. It's called Charlies Angel. I should have some seeds saved by October so will let you know.

Any tips for saving the seeds,Shirl? So I won't need to ask you for more!

Towards the end of the season stop picking your plants and let them go to seed. Depending on the weather you should get enough for next year. Let them ripen on the plant if possible. Dont be tempted to take the green pods off. What I do is, When the pod goes brown I split the pod as you would when shelling peas and if the seeds are still green then leave them on the stem with the seeds still attached to the pod.. I have never failed to save enough seed for the next year so its not difficult Caroline
