Hello Teresa  ;D
I remember my auntie keeping ex battery hens. When she first got them they were in a sorry state with half their feathers missing and badly deformed feet. My uncle made them a hen house and they were allowed free reign of the garden. At first they just stood about - obviously not used to their new found freedom - but gradually they began following people round the garden, and even trying a worm or two from newly dug soil. They were very friendly and loved to be picked up and stroked, and every night they sang themselves to sleep. I have always thought there was something very wonderful about a hen's song!
