Topic: rotten boards

I have a biggish sort of problem with old part rotten boards.  I have taken most of the boards out of the ground and now need to get rid of most of them.

We are not allowed bonfires.  I have thought of digging a biggish pit and dropping the boards in and placing a storage box over the top.  Some of the boards are so rotten that they have already broken up into small bits.

Anyone have any thoughts as to the merits or otherwise of doing this?

P.S. doing the digging will help me and probably help the ground.  It is whether or not the old wood will breakdown enough to help the clay soil.

I think they will take a long time to rot down, What is meant by bonfires. No fires at all?.

If they are untreated I would chop them up a bit and make a nice pile somewhere shady and dampish if poss.  All sorts of things will take to hiding in there like stag bettles, frogs etc.

It may not add much to the look of the plot if you are a tidy gardener though!

Got me some off cuts from the railway sleepers and they have been got at by the bugs.
I just stacked them in a corner and in no time they have been eaten away.
Not too much creosote in them now as they must have been 30yrs old or more.
