When I first got trees I bought an apple and pear from a garden centre, they were in big pots and the advice was that I could take the first years fruit.
More recently we have bought those cheap trees from the supermarkets which were almost bare roots, the attached scant information on the label said to remove the first years fruit and encourage root growth.
By we I mean several members of the allotments association. Some did leave one or two fruit on the first year, just to try but the results were tiny tasteless offerings which were not worth eating.
Three years on, the trees are starting to provide a bit of a crop worth having.
