Difficult to say.

Some varieties are a bit more 'shrubby' than others so the blackening could just be the main stem hardening, a bit like a deciduous shrub going from the softwood stage to the hardwood stage, but I couldn't be certain.

Does it feel any different from any of your others? e.g. soft, wet.

Then again it might just be the variety!!

What variety is it?

it was a gift and just told it was a sweet pepper.  It looks OK other than the stem.

Peppers often exhibit purple or black patches on the stems, often around joints, nowt to worry about

We are growing a number of pepper plants in the greenhouse. They all looked really healthy up to a week ago when the leaves started to wilt and there was a deposit on the underside of each leaf that looks like very fine dirt. Cannot see any aphids but haven't a clue on the "dirt" deposits. Any ideas anyone?
