Composting seaweed
« on: November 22, 2003, 22:53:59 »
Hi Guys, been to visit my new lottie today for a quick look around.  The soil is quite poor and in desperate need of some compost.  It is a brand new little site with only 6 plots just cleared by the council.  So minimal weed infestation. :D :DThe plot is about 60 metres from the waters edge of the Menai States with loads of seaweed washed up near by.  What I would like to know is can I compost the dried seaweed or dig it staight into the soil?  The site is very exposed and quite windy so advice on types of fruit and veggies that may thrive :-/ in those conditions would be very helpful..

Hi mimi - sounds brilliant!  Quite a setting.

Congratulations and good luck - Gavin

PS Seaweed?  Haven't a clue - don't get that in Leeds! >:(

This has all been discussed recently but, to repeat, we used it commercially in Jersey before the war - straight onto the ground.

But if you have ready access, I would also compost as much as you can. Lovely stuff. Don't leave heaps around in the heat of summer - the flies love it.

For a bit more info - Google 'vraic' - Tim
