Too late for onions?

Is it really too late to sow some overwintering onions from seed?
They were meant to go in in August - will a few weeks make a big difference?

Hi Sarah.
think I would go for Japanese sets for planting next month,maturing early next year."Senshu Yellow" from Samuel Dobie and son springs to mind........ :)..Alan
