Welsh onions?
« on: April 13, 2009, 20:23:25 »
Today I was given 2 clumps of Welsh onions. Should I plant them as 2 clumps or should I thin  them out.

divide!! if you plant them in small clumps (3 or 4 onions) in reasonably fertile soil you will never have to buy or grow spring onions again!!
You couldn't make it up!

I think you will find when you come to splitting them they split into natural clumps usualy 2 or 3. Dont plant them on the surface, give them  a couple of inches of depth. At the end of the year  you will find that some which you have not thined need splitting again. I take out a clump take off what i want and put the rest back into the ground.
In a couple of years time you will be begging people to take some evem offer to pay them to take some.

I've had a look at them today & they look easy enough to split but how do you harvest them?

When they start growing each onion splits into two IE a bunch of four goes into eight and so on. To harvest them you simply dig out a clump take off what you want and put whats left back and they start again.
I have found that they are not fond of manure.

I don't find them anywhere near as invasive as Chives or tree onions on our clay... I'll have your addy in my deleted folder as I haven't emptied it recently..

If anyone has any to spare I'd quite like to try them. Never heard of them before but I'm attracted by the thought of never having to grow spring onions again! Can you harvest them all year round?

thats the attraction for me as well as this will free up some space for something else maybe later this year and certainly for next year :)

and anything that frees up a bit of space is good for me.........I kinda over-ordred on the seed potatoes and onion sets this year and have already run out of space!

During the worst of the winter months there is no top growth and the clumps go dormant so there is nothing to eat.

I tend to use mine like chives just snipping the green leaves to chop up in a sandwich.

I have thined all mine out so at the moment i dont have any big clumps but come September i will have so if you send me a reminder i will also send some out. This will giv me time to get some suitable boxes.

I only started with a clump in a 6" pot.

Hi all,
I have had 4 clumps of these for 3 years, but they seem to have died off, with our very cold spell we had in February  ???  I hope I can scrounge some from another plot holder ;) They are as good as everybody here has said I just used to shove a trowel in & dig some up as needed.

                                                                          Adrian.
