Chives and Germination
« on: March 31, 2009, 16:06:00 »
 :(

Is it just me? I have tried putting them in a very warm place in the dark, putting them on a windowsill, in light, but not full sunlight etc etc, but not one seed has germinated yet. Is there a trick I don't know about, or just bad luck?

Have you tried putting a plastic bag over the pot with an elastic band?

I grew mine straight on the plot last year and they seemed fine. I cut them up, put them in the freezer, now i keep forgetting to use them. Remembered last night (first time for ages) and mixed them into mashed potato, lovely. Is the seed ok (new this season) or have you kept some seed from previous. Think i set them same time as spring onion, march onwards. Seemed to take quite a while to grow until ready, if i remember right.

Katynewbie, looking at Tee Gees site and thinking about how I grow them, they might be too warm. I pop a few in a pot then bunged it in my placcy greenhouse. They took just over 10 days to germinate (they've just come through)
hope this helps

All the alliums are able to germinate at lower temps. Too high temps seem to stop germination.

If you're ever passing through I can do you about 300 pots full, just dig them up and take them away!!  ::)
