 What is well rotted organic matter? In this months GW there is a how to grow carrots & it says to dig in some well rotted organic matter. I must be thicker than I thought because I thought that was manure or compost & I keep reading & being told not to manure the carrot bed. Please confirm my degree of thickness soon. Thanks.

Hi Janet

You are not being 'thick'.  Too many gardening articles assume folks understand terms rather than explaining them IMHO. 

Well rotted organic matter is 'good compost' - that is stuff that has broken down through the composting process so that it smells sweet, is crumbly and you cannot tell what went into making it.  I hope this helps.

I was told to never add fresh manure or compost to a carrot growing area as it encourages fanging(makes the carrots split and grow legs)
