cheap seeds
« on: December 18, 2003, 02:32:09 »
While out today just browsing at my local FOCUS store I ventured to the seed stall where they were selling off 2003 seeds at 20p per packet,  I could'nt help myself and bought two packs of tomato seed, I have just recieved my order of 2004 seeds and dont really require any more but what chance do last year's / this year stock have of germinating when I get round to starting them off.

Hello Jock!

A few people here have been buying their cut-price seeds from Focus (wish I had a store nearby) - isn't there a use-by date on the packet?  Thought I read somewhere that their Focus seeds were good until 2005. My little book gives longevity of tomato seeds as 4-9 years, depending on the cv. Hope this helps & good growing- Lishka

Lish, there should be a sell-by date on the packetbuti think you will be OK as long as the packets have not been split or torn. I have planted seeds from really old packets (some ipomeas from 1989) which came up fine.

I got peas (3 vars.), broad beans (2 vars.), carrots, parsnips and leeks for a quarter of the price I usuallu pay, and if only half of them grow it will be a bargain - I always grow too many anyway.
