8x4 raised beds for less than £10 each
« on: March 05, 2009, 06:55:39 »
Good news!

B&Q are selling pressure treated 2.4m (8ft) decking for £2.98 each.

A bed requires 3 plus a few coach bolts (cheap at Screwfix) or screws.

Corner posts are optional, (I have found that they are unnecessary)

See how to do it on:-

How deep are they? 6" (150mm)...  :-\

Might use them for temporary Cold Frames..  :)

They are 6" and they are on special offer.
It is not the first time, you have to visit regularly.

I imagine they are trying to shift last years stock to make room for this years, and hence its on a store by store basis.

The have them in the Reading warehouse - fairly well hidden away from their standard decking. Problem is it's only 4" wide and 1" thick - scaffolding planks, the traditional method for raised beds are 9" wide and 1.5" thick.
A better bet for raised beds are their pressure treated joists 200mm wide, 50mm thick and 3.6m long, thats 10"x2"x12ft for £8.98.
Whilst you don't necessarily need corner posts putting a 2"x2"x24" post in at the corners stops the bed from wandering of moving when you're digging it in preporation for this/next season.

These beds are a real inspiration.  ( The video of your plot is super Allaboutliverpool :)

Couple of questions!!!!!
  • I think I understand the construction of the basic frames....when you add to them to gain height how are you fixing them in place....is it by altering the height of internal posts/pegs?
  • what height are the squash houses (the polythene/wood frame bits? and is it the same wood you are using for the top bit of structure that you use for frame/base
  • what type of polythene do you ask for and how are you attaching it to the frames?
  • love the wee greenhouses, is there a plan for them somewhere?
  • what width are the bean beds with the frames above them

edit: £2.52 a length in my B&Q this morning

Hope I am not asking too much!

I think thats the best thing B&Q have done with their decking, selling the stuff off for other purposes rather than being an arbour for vermin, ;)
