I planted put my seed potatoes over the weekend and now the weather has turned cold, to protect them over this cold spell can I just cover the area with thick black plastic sheeting which I just happen to have loads of?

We had a frost overnight (slight) The spuds will be OK until they sprout... a layer of straw etc on the soil under the plastic also helps... :)
