On accepting gifts
« on: January 05, 2004, 18:58:40 »
A recent post on the subject of liming has raised an important issue, especially for new lottie holders.

Gardeners tend to be a sociable and generous bunch of folk and will often be willing to share-that is by and large a good thing. BUT even at the risk of seeming a little rude do not accept plants eg brassicas and aliums until you know that they come from a disease free plot/garden.

There are ways of decling offers without giving offence and it should not be too difficult-and once you are happy that they are clean you can always go back and take them up later.

Very good point Cleo
I was given some cabbages by a lovely Irish gent down the lottie and the first thing he said was he did not have club root.
Then showed me how to plant a cabbage with an inch cube of rhubarb in the hole first he reconed this stopped it.
I know other down the lottie have clubroot but the onion one worries me love onions so I dont like anyone walking on my lottie.

Gosh Teresa-I had forgotten that tip-I did it years back when I had my first half plot-and it seemed to work.

It`s got me thinking-how many old tips have even us long time gardeners forgotten?

Sorry that did not mean to read as an exclusive thing-just got me thinking about the `lore`.

We don't inherit the earth, we only borrow it from our children.
