old tyres for npotatoe pots
« on: January 29, 2009, 16:14:47 »
Hi all,

Just read about using old tyres as a growing pot for potatoes  :o

Its saying that you can layer them as the potatoes grow one on top of the other and that you can put 3 tubers per tyre! My question is would this be safe or would the tyres contaminate the soil and pots growing inside?

Anyone tried this before?

Thanks Lucy

I've not tried growing spuds in tyres, always seems a bit unwieldy to me, but I know a lot of people do with good results. I use tyres as protection for early planting out of squashes, courgettes etc. They keep the young plant sheltered from the wind and help to keep the weeds down.

there is an issue with chemical contamination, if you worried by it, line them with polythene. also, they very heavy when full of soil, and not easy to extact the spuds. ;)
You couldn't make it up!

we've done it in the past, when we had warm weather  ;D ;D
didn't water them enough and the crop suffered,
We put 2 tyres up, 3 seed pots, covered, when they came through, added another tyre, covered them up and carried on until we had 6 tyres..we only used earlies, when we wanted them, we toppled them onto the nearest bed and dug the spuds out  ;D
