are gravel boards good for raised beds
« on: January 07, 2009, 16:54:52 »
I have rang the local timber merchant in derby and they have quoted me £2.73 for 3.6.m gravel boards which are 1 inch thick and 6" deep would these be a good buy for raised beds and if so what height should we go for 6" or 12".
Thanks in advance

That depends how far you want to raise your beds. There are three factors involved. If your plot gets waterlogged, that might be a reason to go for twelve inches. on the other hand, if you're short of energy for the necessary labouring, or short of material to fill the beds, six inches might be more sensible.

I have used gravel boards and they are fine.

12 will need a lot of filling,I have done 6 and they have been fine :)

I used gravel boards on a couple of beds when the free scaffold boards ran out, although they are only six inches high they can always be extended upwards if needs be.  :) :)
