Topic: A lot of plants to id!

I have a large number of pictures of plants from my garden which I cannot put exact names to, any help would be most appreciated. TIA.

N0 4 Sept. Potentilla but which?


N0 5 June No ideas at all beyond Campanulacea

No 10 May Geranium but which?

They have renamed so many plants these ast few years, I could only hazard a guess at the phlox,  minima colvin

The geranium looks like something we know locally as the blood cranesbill, but is it a double.

I've got an RHS book on hardy geraniums but I can't find it in there. Can't help with the others either, I'm afraid.

No 1 is proving very difficult, no one has come up with a name as of yet.
The Phlox is probably P. bifida alba
Silene schafta
No 5 is Codonopsis grey-wilsoni
No 9 is probably a Saxifrage.
Still looking for definitive names for the others. Thanks for trying.

No.1 puts me in mind of the Red Valerian  known locally as Ventnor Pride. I know its flower is white but the foliage is like the juvenile leaf. Have you tried seaching coastal plants? to see if it is amongst them.

Love Red Valerian, but it is one of those plants which just does not seem to want to grow here. Never tried the white version and this is defo a planted plant. Ta anyway.

I thought the first one was Iberis but not sure the leaves fit, can't see them too well

Having looked in the 'library' ;D - Alpines for your garden by Alan Bloom, the only two possibles I can come up with are No 7 Erodium chamaedrioides (which does look a good match).  The other, No 8 ? Penstemon edeithea.

I'll be interested to know what No 1 is.

Silene armeria is probably more widely known and grown in the US, despite being a native European wild flower. It is variously described as an annual, a biennial, or a short-lived perennial, although it is usually treated as an annual. It is somewhat leggy, being around a foot tall, with a thin stem and greyish lance-shaped leaves, topped with a cluster of bright pink flowers around an inch across in summer.

Like most catchflies, both the stems and leaves are sticky, although there seems to be debate also about the reason for this. One website I found said the stem exudes a sticky sap, although the usual explanation is that small hairs on the stem and leaves trap flies and other insects that try to take the nectar without pollinating the flowers.

I do grow Silene armeria, but the usual version is darker red than this one which is why I wondered if it was a different one.
Still not got a definitive answer for most of them except No. 6 which could well be  Paeonia emodii.

Hi Palustris! They look like very nice plants! You could try contacting the Alpine Garden Society to ID them. Go to: http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/ Not sure where you live, but there might be a local AGS group nearby. I am sure someone there would be only too happy to help. Good luck!

First of all the Geranium is G. himalayense Birch Double or G.h. flore=plenum as it is now called.

Compostfairy, the trouble is that the AGS people ask ME for plant identitfication!

smile! know what you mean! I will ask a friend who is very good at naming obscure alpines, but who is profoundly technophobic! Well, it'll give him something useful to do over the Xmas period! I'm in the West Midlands area if it helps?

Me too, West Midlands that is.
Trouble is most of the plants are herbaceous or shrubs rather than alpines. I suppose in the end I will have to print the pictures off and take them to a friend who is a Botanist to see if he can help.
Even more annoying I was given a definite id of No. 9 and I have forgotten what was said.
I must get round to posting the rest of the pictures too. (Don't worry, not all 246 of them!).
