What makes your plot soooooooooo special?
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:17:32 »
At the moment I can say how tidy it is, but I know that won't last for long as soon as Spring arrives. But I think what is special about my site are the sunsets.

The land is so flat around St Ives (Cambridgeshire) that the 20 metre height of our allotment site means it's one of the highest areas around, so there's nothing blocking the view.

To see some examples click the link below to my blog site.... what makes your site special?

Because it is mine. ;D ;D  It is my haven and saviour.  I cannot pinpoint one particular thing I like best about it.  I spend just about every spare minute I have down at my plot.  Just because I can.  Not necessarily doing much... it is just the tranquility of being there that I love.  Everything I guess..... except the weeds 8) 8)

I know just what you mean KT.  It's my little space to plan and make something.  I can choose when I share it and be proud of sharing it with all the family.

Sometimes I've rushed up there with a 2 hour slot while my little one is in playgroup just to sit and stop for a while and watch the bees pollinating and the flowers and veggie plants I've grown.

Sometimes all the family go and the children rush excitedly off to crowd around and spot potatoes being dug, or pick peas and beans.

I've only had the plot for a year and a half but already its full of memories!

No kids (unless they've been press ganged) and no springie spaniels springing everywhere like demented zebedees!!!  :o  Just peace and quiet lol.  Not to mention getting all over excited whenever something starts growing!
What I lack in ability and experience, I make up for in sheer enthusiasm!!!

It brings all my family together to help with the plot.

My Daughter and husband bring our two granddaughters 3 and 5 year olds,
My Son and his wife bring our grandson 3 year old.

They all find something to do ,and we can have some good fun.

It's my bit of life without a compromise. I do it all the way I want with no-one to tell me otherwise. My bit of heaven ;D

The joy of nurturing the plants, the fact you can eat the produce is almost a lovely coincidence.  And that it's something OH and can do together, even though there is clear demarcation in our roles ( him, estate & facilities management, me, production management)
is it in the sale?

Like Emaggie said, it's my little patch, where I can go and be myself, organise things the way I want them and do things in the order that I choose.  It is the only area of life where I don't have to compromise.

Where do I start - all of the above! But mainly because in the beginning (almost 25 years ago) it was "his" then because he swore I was "needed" I reluctantly visited and from the moment I walked through the gates I was hooked and it has become "ours" we work together but separately (the secret of all long lasting relationships!).  It's therapy, it's a constant challenge, it's a sanctuary, its a meeting place, it's a family venture (g'kids have so many happy memories) but most of all it's a place were we still bond after almost  25+ years (for bonding read arguing and making up!!).

After family it's the biggest part of our lives.........

PS I married a very wise man :-*

All of the above for me.

It's mine, I can do with it as I wish. No one to tell me where to plant this or that that don't look right. Even when there's nothing to do I just sit in my shed with my flask looking out surveying all I own... Well, 20 sq rods of it anyway.

I've spent the best part of my life fostering and looking after children. When they're at school, the only time they're not all with us,  and the Wife goes an does lunch with my Daughter or does what she does, there is nothing better than sitting, digging or working in total solitude with nothing but the buzz of the bees or tweet of the birds.

It truely is sanctuary.

Tony.

Sow it, grow it, eat it.

You've all summed it up so well there's not much more I can add. But one thing I love is that it is about the only place where I can truly switch off from a hectic job, and I've never grown out of the child like excitement of being able to pick something I've grown all myself and be able to eat it straight away - can anyone think of anything nicer than strawberries still warm from the sun?

I'm also lucky that I have fantastic neighbours on my plot, everyone looks out for each other and looks after their plot if they are away and even when it's too cold to do any work there (like I'm expecting tomorrow to be!) we still go just to have a cup of tea and a chat in the shed. It's my favourite place and that's what makes it soooooo special.
