Where can you buy paraffin?
« on: November 09, 2008, 12:18:40 »
Garages used to sell it years ago, but not any more.

I need it for a greenhouse heater.

B&Q have it in 4 litres.  Also old-fashioned hardware stores, the two within a mile of me sell it.

I thought there was a B&Q near me, but it turned out to be a Homebase, I'll try Shell next time I'm filling up.
Do you have to provide your own containers?

No.  pre-packed 5litres.  (Last winter I paid £10.50 for 5litres.)

i pay now £4.50 for 4litres fron a small hardware shop but they have said that selling loose parrafin is now illegal due to european laws and should only be purchased in sealed plastic containers. This is possibly correct as all outlets garages etc no longer sell it. If you can get your hands on red diesel which is used on farms it is less than half the price and is only illegal to use in car engines but ok to use in parrafin burners and isprobably the best to use for crops as it has a vast amount of carbon dioxide etc coming from it

It is not the same as it used to be. It has a different smell now.

My local little hardware store advertises paraffin at 90p per litre. Last year it was 75p. Hefty inflation rise - especially as you have to reuse your own container (which has to be suitable and labelled properly).

It isn't illegal to seel parafin in bulk. What's happened is that the vendor now needs the same sort of baffled bulk tank that petrol stations have which is cost-prohibitive for small retailers.

That's probably why ours has gone up, then. They have to pay for the storage somehow!

I would not use red diesel but burning oil or kerosene as used in domestic heating would probably be okay.

Might be worth giving Richardsons in Feltham a ring as they used to do it.(020) 8890 4399 or maybe one of the garden centers local to you.

Just an update against using red diesel or Kerosene in a paraffin heater you could kill your plants because of the sulphur content apparently
