Pruning raspberries
« on: November 11, 2008, 10:03:30 »
Just wondered if anyone can help me. This summer I planted Autumn Bliss and Glen Ample raspberries (3ft high plants) . Having never grown them before, I wondered if anyone can tell me the best way to chop them back, if I need to at all?

I've read differing views on the web and have now confused myself!

Many thanks for any help you can give.

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose

Proper advice:
Cut all the bliss down to a couple of inches.
Leave the Glen Ample.

My advice - leave the Bliss until after you get an early crop next year.

Hi.

Cut back the Autumn Bliss either now or around Feb, to about 6 inches from the ground. Once the new canes appear in the spring cut the old ones right back to the ground. The fruit will come on the new canes in the late summer. The later you cut the canes back the later you will get the crop, in theory. I only grow Autumn Bliss now, (the birds leave them alone so they don't need netting) so I have already cut mine back to get an earlier crop.

As for the Glen Ample next years fruit will be carried on this years canes so don't cut these back until after fruiting next summer.
I'd rather be flying
