Swap request list
« on: October 09, 2008, 21:17:48 »
Hi all
first let me start with my sob story; I had a fair lot of seeds collected, and my husband mistook the carrier bag they were in for rubbish, and threw the whole lot out! So I lost an assortment of stuff including lychnis coronaria, some rather beautiful tall pink poppies, and some teeny tiny miniature pink poppies as well. Chives, garlic chives, aquilegia, runner beans, beetroot, and various other veg...

I'm starting a kitchen garden from scratch when we move into our new place in Reading on Nov 1st. I have next to zero to spend on it, so am hoping to replenish my seeds by swapping and cadging where at all possible!

I have very little to swap in return at the moment, but I do have Mirabilis Jalapa, and Phlomis Russeliana.

Anyone have any of the above-mentioned to swap? Also any veg seeds, particularly courgettes, pumpkins, marrows, greens of any sort, salad of any sort. Am also open to suggestions for any kind of low maintenance veg at all! We travel sometimes for weeks at a time, so I'll be trying to avoid the temptation to grow anything too demanding.

cheers,
Helen

Hi Helen,

I would love a few of each of the seeds you have to swap if you can spare them.

In return I can certainly send some Poppies, Chives, Aquilegia, Runner Beans, Beetroot and other veg, as well as salads.

Please pm me your address if you are interested.
Jo.

I've got lots of Lychnis coronaria (I love them and they self-seed once they are in). Happy to send them without a swap if you send me a PM with your address.

Courgettes are low maintenance as long as you don't mind them turning into marrows while you're away! Have you got someone who will water and pick and weed (aka a saint)while you're away (Assuming we get a summer next year!)? If so, most things will be ok once they get going.

Hi Caroline

I hope I'll be able to find a 'garden buddy' to help out when I'm away, in return for the same favour. There are two allotments very near where we'll be living; my own kitchen garden is going to be our own back lawn (little does the landlord suspect!) but I hope to make some contacts at the allotments. Otherwise I'll have to devise an irrigation system and hope for the best! It'll be sod's law that we'll go away when everything is at peak production, I'm sure! :-D

You seem to have had a lot of responses so, after you have decided on the ones from those offered, if there is anything missing from your "needs" list let me know as I know I have veggies of various kinds and I don't have an allotment - but I do try things.

What colour is the Mirabilis?  I have had a look on the web and there seems to be many different ones.

I expect to have quite a few spare, just post again saying what you're short of.

Hi Nemesia, hi Barnowl

thanks to a fantastic response here, I've now got most of what I was after. Courgettes are the main lack at the moment, so I'd still be on the cadge for those if anyone has some spare! :D

The mirabilis is a beautiful hot pink, a bit like a fuschia pink. The leaves are a mid, vibrant green that I think is sometimes called chartreuse. Still have plenty of those if you'd like some?

cheers,
x H
