Crocosmia - Propagation by seed?
« on: August 18, 2004, 21:50:28 »
This isnt realy for bm but for Eileen, who saw te pictures i posted of my crocosmial lucifer and asked about some seed.

The plants have now finished flowering and are producing pea shaped pods where the flowers were. I am assuming this is seeds forming, question is can you grow new plants from these sucessfully or do you have to dig the plants to get at the underground corms to propagate it. (ie division)

'Lady Cosmos' mentioned something like this in another thread, but I am a little confused still.

Could someone clarify this for me so that I can help Eileen out?

The accepted (and usual) method of propagation to increase stock is by division in early spring.

However, as new hybrids can only be obtained from seed, logic indicates that there must be some prospect of success from seed sowing, although I`ve no idea under what conditions, and the probability is that you will end up with a batch of mainly throw-backs to the original Montbretia aurea type
