sweetcorn :(
« on: August 03, 2004, 22:07:40 »
Think my sweetcorn is a failure this year - about 2ft tall and have the male  flower thingies on them. No sign of other thingies though.

Mine seemed slow to start, but in the last couple of weeks they have put on tremendous growth and now have the cobs showing.  Maybe there is still time for them to catch up.

Agree. There's hope yet! Anyway, no rush? The rain will have helped. = Tim

Rain, what rain? We didn't get a drop! :'( Mine started flowering, and then suddenly it seemed out of nowhere the cobs appeared! My 2nd lot planted weeks later are not even flowering yet, so I would say it may be a sucess yet Multi! (Don't forget when the cobs appear they like plenty of water! DP

I think it is a failure - had a closer look and there are no cobs/tassels at all. Oh well.

Planted mine very early. Nice cobs already but many have been ravaged. Probably rats.
We have been saving plastic milkbottles all winter to put around the cobs when they start getting ripe as mice/rat protection. I guess we waited just a bit too long with them.
So, Mr. C. tried putting the bottles around the remaining cobs but........they are too short, way too short. Soft drink bottles 1 - 1.5 L have a deposit on them here, that's why the milk bottles but never thought they would be too short. What a shame.

Hi - would like some advice re Sweetcorn being destroyed

I suspected vandals had hit my sweetcorn but as only the cobs were shredded and bits of corn left around the base could this be rats? (I would prefer to think it was rats) All the mature cobs were attacked. I have some that I planted later - how can I protect them when they mature?

My lottie neighbour says that squirrels get her cobs, they strip the cob off and eat it under a tree having a "cordon bleu" meal!!
