RESULT

I purchased a flat screen telly from currys(spit) 4 years ago. As it was more than I had ever spent on a telly before I insured it with their 'whateverhappens' policy.

It went wrong so I phoned up to get it fixed. The blurb on the policy said they would call within 2 days. WRONG! they could not get to see me for 4 days. In the end I took the telly to the shop. They phoned me the next day to tell me it was fixed WRONG! It still had the problem it went in with. So I took it back to the shop again 3 days later.

I waited and waited then they rang me to tell me they had just ordered the parts This was 24 days after the first 'fix'.

I then noticed that my policy stated 'If we cannot fix it within 21 days you will get a replacement'.

Back down to currys(spit) and pointed it out to them. AH BUT, A BUT, OH BUT. Your telly has only been away 15 days, WRONG!  What about the first time you were supposed to fix it. Oh that does not count.

I did anticipate a negative answer so I whipped out my phone that has a facility for recording memos. Then asked the manager to repeat the answer for the benefit of the trading standards office.

Everything changed then, A proper manager came in from the sidelines all smiles and apologies for the misunderstanding. He declared my old set a writeoff and said they would send me a voucher so I could get a new telly.

My old one cost £799, but new and better spec sets now only cost half of that, which was what I was expecting.

In the post today, a currys(spit) voucher for £850 the extra was for the inconvenience.

So it pays to be firm when dealing with them. Also moaned about all the silly gadgets on the phone, I reckon I might make more use of the sonic screwdriver from now on.

Second what Lorna, said Ace ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D,

I had a very similar experience with them i couldent get anywhere so in the end, i went to the store & said may i see the manager gave a false name because of all the calls , when he appeared i handed him a letter to say if he did not replace my TV in 48hrs i would take them to court, & while i was there i told 2 customers do not buy here the after sales is terrible.  I had a new Tv within the hour they couldent wait to get rid of me. It pays to fight these bullies.

Don't push them too far when you complain, I was permanently banned from their Aberystwyth store after I went in to return a dvd recorder under warranty.

Well done Ace, I avoid those shops like the plague.  A friend (who should have known better - used to work for IBM) phoned the other week (I'm his technical support line) and said he'd done a stupid thing.  His new laptop has Vista, but no drivers available for his printer yet, so he's been using one of my spare PCs for his freelance work.  Then he found out that a driver was available, so went into PC world.  Big mistake.  Said he wanted the driver on a CD, and they tried to sell it to him for £15.  He thought that was too pricey, so a manager reduced it to £9.99 and he took it home.  No printer driver, but a driver for another scanner and some other printing bumph that no-one wants.  So he phones me just so I can tell him he should've downloaded it for nothing from the printer manufacturer's website.

Being banned from the store seems like not such a bad thing Baccy! Mt experience of them has been so bad that I would not willingly go into one anyway!

Just make sure there's no small print on the voucher... like "cannot be used in any branch of Curry's"

I had an extended warranty for ""What ever happens" on a cooker. When it broke I was given such a run around for nearly 3 weeks, it was awful. We couldn't cook our meals, and relied on the microwave all that time.

Every time I called them I logged every detail and it runs into two full pages with 30 entries. Things like telling me to call the insurance company and tell them to send Curry's an email, being told to call their service centre (with a wrong number), being told I need to get in touch with the manufacturer etc.  >:( >:( >:(

I would strongly recomment that, if you're tempted to buy something from Curry's take a good deep breathe, and count to ten  :P

I know that the price is a lot less but twice I have returned digiboxes to Asda and they exchange them with no hassle at all.  Whatever was wrong with them was probably my fault anyway but it's great when you can take something back and not have to gear yourself up for an argument.

Not electrical, but I had the same good after service at Asda.
Funny enough it was a spade for the lottie £6.99.
Knew it would not be up to much at that price but figured it would do until I got my own tools back from my mums garage.
Never expected the spade to break while taking the wrapping off it though.
The wife took it back next morning and had no problems getting my money back.
That was the second one they had taken back that day, so don't buy a spade at Asda
