Topic: Yay! I just grew my first spud!

Ok, sad I know, but I had to share  :P  Just checked my first earlies in pots and I found a spud! Put it back because it was a bit weenie - but I'm just so pleased!!!  ;D ;D ;D

I know the feeling. I let Grandson 13 (next door) grow some spuds in 2 black buckets. I had a feel around this evening and felt a fair size pot. Took it round to him to show him the first pot he (or I) had ever grown!!!!
I am going away with young Lorna and Joshua for a few days next week so I said we will see if we can get enough for a meal when we come home Friday :)

I really must stop digging up things before they are ready.  Had about 3 small potatoes and dug up some carrots but they were too small but at least I thinned them out.  Had one ripe strawberry and must leave the strawberries and redcurrants to ripen.  Netted the strawberries and half of the redcurrants but the birds are quicker than me.

Picked some broad beans but the beans were very small so must leave them for a bit longer.  I find the picking better than the weeding and digging.  I even plant seeds and forget and then dig them up by mistake.

I think my early spuds have white flowers and the ones planted later have purple flowers is this correct.  I really must label as my brocolli and sprouts are mixed up, but who cares.

This is my second year growing at the Lotty and ive managed to plant all 100ft. i was mega excited last weekend when my 5yrold grandson and I ahd a lovely firkle for first earlies (Swift0. we cooked a super meal om the camping mstove at the Lotty of spuds, spinach, first overwintered peas, first overwintered broad beans with some fish we took along and radishes and little gems. Finished with first ripe strawberries, they are so big and sweet this year! I planted out 30 plants from runners that sprouted from the 5 plants given to me last year. we had such a feast, im lovin' it.(Stuck at work today).

When i read this i laughed because i had visions of you picking the potato off the plant and putting it back saying to yourself " i will let it grow a bit more "
I think this stems from Her Who Must Be Obeyed when i said I have got seven rows of potatoes in today and she asks if i have brought any up for dinner.
Just of down the garden to get some spuds and she asks me to dig some big ones up

I just had my first meal of this years earlies (late going in)- its sooo good to have fresh spuds again!

Some very tiny ones up the lottie so I'll give those another week or 2 I think.

Absolutely no bloody carrots anywhere, so now I give up on those.  And all the lovely runner beans and french beans, brocolli and sprouts have been stripped to the stems by flaming slugs!  Out of all the plants I put in last week, 3 have survived!!!! I'm so cross!!!!  >:( >:( >:(

Organic slug pellets are pants - it's out with the real ammunition today!

I've had the same problem in the past. This year I'm leaving them out to get well and truly hardened off before I plant them out. I don't know whether it'll make a difference, but I'll soon find out.

This year I cut the bottoms out of used plastic cups and soda bottles and put these over seeds of sprouts, cucs, squash, some pole beans, parsnips and some flowers- really cut down on the slug damage. Think I'll save stacks of them over the winter from now on but will try for clear plastic cups instead of white ones.

The other plus for the clear soda bottles (without the lid on by the way) was they act as a mini-greenhouse as others have pointed out. The seedling growth under them was hearty.
