We always use Nippon Ant Killer - puff a thin trail of it all around the room extremities - & outside the house. One dose usually sufices.No point in spraying them.

A bit of jam mixed with borax is good, put underneath a stone or something so the rain doesn't get onit or the bees eat it. They take it back to the nest and feed the other ants with it, then they all die.
I used lavender oil last year and it seemed to work
I use a spray called Deathlac - you spray it in a strip on the floor or wall where they're coming in and bingo no more ants! Once it dries it's non-harmful to pets or kids.
