Berlotti Beans
« on: May 30, 2008, 08:23:14 »
Hi, I'm new to the forum, can anyone help with my query please.  I have been give some berlotti beans by a friend with no instructions! They are at present in the greenhouse just sprouting.  Do they climb and need support when planted out. Many thanks.

I planted some last year expecting them to climb but they only grew to about knee high, I then read the packet and realised they were dwarf ones, I hadn't realised that you can get dwarf and climbing. This year I have planted climbing ones which grow like runner beans. I would just plant them next to a cane on a wigwam or row and see what happens, even dwarf ones will use the cane to climb a bit.

I will do just that, many thanks.  Not sure what type they are, but they are very pretty to look at in bean form.

If you look here they have the dwarf and climbing varieties of the same bean:

hi, jagdens, welcome to the site, we had the same experience as glosterwomble two years ago, last year we grew climbers , much better returns, if the plant grows to 2' and starts flowering, they're dwarf ones, just don't plant in the middle of your runners like we did  ;D

I am worried now!  I didn't realise that they came any other size than climbing!

Not sure what I have although the ones I have in the tunnel seem to be making their way skyward!  The packet was written mainly in Italian so didn't really look!
