A plot neighbour gave me some self-sown seedlings of this because I like purple-leaved plants. No idea what it is though. All I know is it grows tall and upright with a sort of flower plume. Any ideas?

I believe its purple Orache or Good King Henry (or is it the same thing, I dunno for sure), I dont grow it. I think Valmarg grows it, it can be used as spinach

No definitely not Good King Henry. That is green, and the leaves look like spinach.

You're a star, star! That's it, thanks. Atriplex hortensis rubra. Seems it is edible, raw and cooked. I'll give it a try when it gets bigger. I'd grow it just for it's appearance though.
