Productive Climber for Shade?
« on: July 28, 2004, 20:18:36 »
We are having a pergola built to hang our two hammock chairs from. Trouble is the pergola will be sited in a shady spot that gets very early morning sunshine for about 1 hour (that's when the clouds decide to get out of the way!) and then is in shade for the rest of the day. We already have honeysuckle growing through the hedge nearby which could easily be encouraged to climb over the pergola but if possible it would be nice to have something productive to add. Maybe something like a grapevine. Is there anything that climbs that would do well in such a spot and be productive at the same time? Failing that a clematis would be nice but would need to be a shade loving variety, any suggestions?

Funny that - I was going to ask the same question. I have a north-facing fence that will soon be in the extended veg patch, so I'd like to continue the theme and grow something edible up it.

Or something that would encourage hover flies, bees, butterflies, ladybirds and other helpful critters.
gone to pot :D
