stupid tomato question
« on: May 12, 2008, 17:12:56 »
my first year growing toms and I thought I'd do it at home rather than the allotment so that I can tend to them every day if necessary. I've cleared the only available bit of space in my little garden but have now realised that it's west-facing and only gets the sun in the afternoon ::). do toms need to be in full sun all day or can I get away with it? ???

I grow some in a spot that gets an hour or so in  the morning and about four hours in the afternoon. They grow a bit slower than the rest but that helps spread the season out.

It really does depend on the variety and each garden-as a very general rule -the bigger the tomato(ie Cherry or beefsteak) the less likely it will mature well outside.

My garden here on the Lincs /Cambs border is West facing and I can ripen a fair few varieties outside, the big stuff like Brandywine and Caspian Pink I keep in the greenhouses/Polytunnel

Two years ago I had succesfull tomatoes (Gardeners delight) on an east facing wall which only got the morning sun.

As long as it's better than last years weather you will get some on a west facing wall I would think.

Well 15 minutes depending on the traffic and if you come the back way and wait an eternity at the Lolham/Bainton crossing-but then again the road is closed for bridge repairs :)
