The free giant fuchsias
« on: May 08, 2008, 17:12:33 »
Giant Fuchsia Devonshire Dumpling
Giant Fuchsia Royal Mosaic
Giant Fuchsia Rocket fire.

Just have 3 plugs, my question is how big would you expect each plug to get too.  Do I plant one in each basket, or all 3 in one?

Would love some advice, found info on them, just not growing sizes :)

Thanks.

I would expect each one to fill a seperate basket. That's how I will be planting mine anyway  :).

Opposite to me as I always have three trailing fuchsias in 12 and 14 inch baskets to get a good display.

I always use 2 or 3 per basket, along with a couple of surfinias, some lobelia and a couple of whatever else I can squeeze in!
What I lack in ability and experience, I make up for in sheer enthusiasm!!!

Hi Springbokgirlie.
What i normally do with fuchsia plug plants for hanging baskets, is the first year start them in 6" hanging pots. you then get to know how they shape up for hanging baskets for the following year, over winter in a frost free place. aim to get them started back into growth in March, take plenty of cuttings.
 I normally plant 5 to a 12" basket and 7 to a 14" basket and 9 to a 16" basket
hope that helps.

Springbokgirlie, I think the 'giant' description of the plants you have bought refers to the size of the flowers, rather than the plants.  I grow a lot of fuchsias, and these varieties have particularly large flowers.

If you bought them as plugs, they are probably not going to get too big this year, so would probably plant all three in one basket.

Fuchsias benefit from being 'pinched out', ie two sets of leaves, and pinch out the tip, encouraging the plant to bush out.  You could use the pinched out tips as cuttings to produce more plants.

Hi Springbok, i phave put all 3 of mine into a basket yesterday with other leftover bits & pieces.
If you do pinch them out it means they will flower a lot later. There is a Fuschia specialist on here who told me this.
He said they flower as late as 60days after you have pinched them out. It is VEGGIE PERRIN, you can always PM him for any advice he is a mind of information on the plants he used to show them & has won many times , lucky chap but lots of hard work i have seen some of his piccies. Rosebud.

Just to confirm what rosebud said about stopping and the length of time it takes for Fuchsias to flower after stopping.
 Singles take appox 60 days
 Semi-doubles take appox 70 days
Doubles take appox 80 days (which you have Springbok)
 Triphyllas take appox 14 weeks

Yes the 'giant' does refer to the flower sizes not the plant size.
We do show fuchsias and put 15 cuttings in a 16" basket !!
I would plant them seperate as they all have slightly different 'types' in growth, in late September strip them of all leaves ect and in a few weeks you will have loads of cutting material, take loads and then you can do lovely baskets next year, we have about 300 'mother' plants who are just to produce cutting material.

Rosebud and rdm51, I wasn't suggesting that sbg should pinch out the tips to get her plants to 'showbench' status.  I just suggested that fuchsias benefit from pinching out, and that the pinched out 'bits' could be used as cuttings, thereby increasing her stocks.

I am an amateur grower of fuchsias, and as such was making a suggestion.

Hi Valmarg
No problem from me. was just making my own suggestions so no offence taken here. Everybody has they own way of growing and i'm not trying to say mine are the best way to grow them, it's just the way i grow them.
Wish you all the best and happy growing.
