bolted garlic
« on: July 22, 2004, 09:38:58 »
About half of my garlics have bolted. I dug one up and the bulbs is still quite small (smaller than what you buy from the supermarket).

Should I harvest it now or can I leave it in a little longer?

The buds are so bizarre looking!
gone to pot :D

Sad - but better than the rot.
Lift now! And use, or preserve  - because they won't keep.= Tim

THanks.

There wouldn't be any left from the amount we use anyway!

Some of the garlics as part of their normal growth, throw up a flower doofy (called a scape?) which, according to Tuckers for one variety, should be half chopped off two-three weeks before lifting.

Meditteranean is the one in the Tuckers catalogue. Does Rocambole ring a bell with this type of garlic?

If you have elephant garlic, that needs to be harvested just before the flowers open.
