Topic: SWT Osprey nest

If anyone is interested in Ospreys, there is a really good webcam of a nest in Scotland. Even has sound so you can hear the activity, albeit a bit loud sometimes :o I watched it last year and followed it though to the laying of the eggs to the chicks fledging. The diary is really interesting and well written.

The female has laid her first egg at 4.10 this morning ;D Dont if she has laid anymore as she is in the nest at the moment :D

We are in for an interesting few weeks now, let's hope that egg is the first of a few as last year there were three and only two survived. In any event, she has set somewhat of a record, laying her 50th egg :D

Slightly off thread but you can also watch the peregrine falcons at Derby Cathedral. She is sat on some eggs at present and there is quite a developed website.

I don't think it is operating yet - when it is, it should be available via the RSPB as it is their webcams - which I hope doesn't mean it is going to be refreshed periodically like a lot of theirs.

Yes, fingers crossed.  I will be up there this summer to have a look at them.  Annual visit to that Osprey nest.  I have enjoyed watching her on the web cam, thanks for the link.

The webcam link is great.

A few years ago I was working at Lochwinnoch at the Muirshiel Hen Harrier site, watching the cam and keeping notes. It was great and all was going well till one morning all the chicks got taken by a fox and I had to watch it on the camera unable to help. I know its all part of nature etc but I must admit my sympathies for foxes stopped that day. Its strange how you get attached even via a camera.

Fab clips of the hen harriers sawfish, thanks for that. Shame they are so vunerable on the ground though. Must have been awful for you seeing the fox take the chicks. At least the ospreys stand a better chance of survival.

well this is the problem, we seem so concerned about protecting the fox because we see them skipping around our streets with their cute cubs but we dont think about the consequences of their growing numbers.

Hen harriers are down to 1 pair in 2005 from 10 pairs in 1996 at Muirshiel, at least thats what it was 3 years ago and that was the pair who's chicks were taken. Maybe its 0 now, I'll have to find out.

Luckily the numbers are a bit higher in the northern isles. Why? No foxes.

I love ospreys too, they're very odd in that they're a breed of their own. You dont get varieties of osprey just slight differences in the same type of bird all over the world, for example the ones in scandinavia are slightly bigger than ours.

Thanks Carol :)  The nest has been quite busy lately in preparation for the new arrivals. The female I have noticed has been extra noisy and demanding.  I did not see it but apparently the male gave her a real ticking off a while back ::) ;D  Hope all three survive this year.
