I have just been given this as my other stuff is doing nothing and since the procedure I had last week to help stop my pain, it has increased 10 fold!!

I would appreciate any personal info on this stuff as I believe it to be pretty strong and addictive.

I ma not keen on pills at the best of times but as I cannot walk right now I ma getting a bit desperate here.

just looked it up, Jeannine..so sorry to hear you're still in such pain, they sound like the meptid tablets I was give, they're an opoid, I was told mine can be addictive so only take them as a last resort but you sound as if you're in such a lot more pain than I am..mine make it so's I know I have pain but just don't care..hope they help..take care

oxynorm is a synthetic opiod used to control pain it is reputed to have less side effects than true opiods but it can in a very rare cases be addictive. in America oxycodone is Known as hillbilly heroin because it is a popular illegal drug. one of the main factors in addiction is why you take the drug you are taking it to stop physical pain not to get a high.

   Pain is invisible only you know how bad your pain is.
   only you can control your pain effectively at home we,re not their.
But Nurses can give you some advice to help do this.

   1) Watch the clock. Take your medicines regularly
   2) no heroes, Don't wait for the pain to be bad hit it early

   Hopefully your doctor has prescribed both regular and as needed medication.

   the commonest side effects that you may encounter are
   constipation and nausea

  if you begin to feel constipated get your G.P. to prescribe a laxative to help prevent constipation there are things you can do yourself

   eat more fruit and veg, increase your fluid intake (water, tea, coffee,squash not spirits sorry) mobilise as much as your pain allows.

   Nausea if it persist to the point that you can't eat see your G.P.

   loss of appetite may result from pain or medication if it happens eat a little and often rather than big meals.

   all that said oxynorm is an excellent pain killer used extensively in oncology and increasingly for post operative pain control.

   Sorry if all that sounds like I,m lecturing a junior Nurse the message is simple take the pills be pain free but watch for side effects and when you don't need them stop taking them.

I'm really sorry to hear you are suffering so much Jeannine. I googled your medication and found a whole load of information about it. Wikipedia for example.

BAsically in answer to your specific question it can be addictive but only if taken over a long period and/or to excess. In your case you need something to combat the pain. Have you spoken to your doctor about your misgivings and for that matter about the continuing pain?

Sorry that you are in so much pain - I echo Grawc - talk to your Doctor as it would seem to me that they should know whether this amount of post operative pain is unexpected. I don't know what you operation you had, but unless you have had something like a joint manipulation or similar I would have thought the pain would be controllable and relatively short-lived as the healing processes take over :-\

Hi Grawc,I don't have any mis givings really, I have little choice now actually . It has been given to me today over the phone as the pain specialist I was seeing is leaving tomorrow for a week, I had stuck it out over the Easter break and phoned the clinic this morning,he phoned me back and then faxed the prescription to my doctor. It was because the procedure they did on my spine last week seems to have gone amiss. I was on a pretty high pain dosage before this happened while waiting for the procedure which I was told can work/ sometimes doesn't work or can get worse. I seem to have copt for the last one. Until he gets back next week and evaluates the situation this is what he has had to do. I have tablets to last a month.

Bimbler, I know what it is, where it comes from and all the side effects but thank you anyway , I appreciate you taking the trouble to help. What I was hoping for was to connect with is someone who is currently taking it and wether it was of sufficient help to warrant the risk of addiction.

I know it as Percodan or Percocet when mixed with aspirin or paracetamol from working at Vancouver General and I know it was not given out very freely, it seems to be the same here as John had to sign for it.

If it in fact it doesn't help there seems no point in putting my body through it. I took it at 6pm and it has made no difference but maybe it needs to build up a bit.

Anyway I would appreciate it if anyone has any personal experience, in a pm is fine. Manics may I ask how much relief you got and how long you were on the one that was similar.

I am getting very sick of sitting down, I have done a lot of seed sowing from my rocking chair LOL

Tomorrow I want to go out as I have something to do John can't do for me but I will have to go in a wheel chair. I am having a hard time dealing with that at the moment.

I think the real worry I have is that I will need to be off work if I can't get it under control, as it Easter holidays I have a couple of weeks by which time I will have seen the pain man again, but if it is going to be long or permanent this will mean I will finally have to quit. I am more than a bit unhappy about that. I think this is where the need to know comes from, and of course I am naturally regretting having the procedure done.

Suzanne,Cambourne, you answered as I was typing.

What I had done was the nerve endings to parts of my spine were burned out so they could not relay messages to the brain and hopefully the spine pain I was struggling with would go away for about 18 months, then they would grow back. I had had two earlier tests in which they anaesthetise the areas rather than cauterise them, if the result was no pain for several hours they know they are targetting the right nerves. I came through all those injections just fine they do about 9 on each side of my spine done under Xray on two different weeks, that seemingly makes me a good candidate for the procedure. They did one side of my spine last Monday, took about 90 minutes. I walked out after with no discomfort , the pain began on Tuesday , I guess after the necessary anaesthetic to the area wore off and it has quickly got very bad. It is not like the usual sort of operation that needs to heal after.

hi, Jeannine..I wasn't very happy on the meptid, I felt 'spaced out', unable to concentrate and just sat like a cabbage until it wore off, I have the same reaction to morphine in hospital..that's just me..Doc gave me a bottle of morphine liquid to take if the pills wore off before I was due the next dose !!

Hi Jeannine. Sorry you are in such pain. Not nice to say the least. Have you thought about acupunture. It's very good for pain relief & some physio departments have people qualified to do it. I swear by it but my problems are minor compared to yours. I can't take pain relief so I had to look for alternatives.

Hi again, thank you for all your help,I do have TENS machine and yes they did acupuncure on the original problem.

Taking the tablets is not an option now, I took the second dose at bedtime and in the night I woke up with a violent reaction to it, won't bore you with all the details but suffice to say it has taken almost 24 hours to get it mostly out of my system. I have been in bed most of the day, extreme vomiting , weakness etc. I feel very poorly now but am much better.

Tried to get on here a couple of hours ago but couldn't sit even for few minutes.

Drs office phoned to see how I was late this afternoon, Dr is coming to see me tomorrow if I feel I need him too, told not to take anymore, not that I needed telling.

So back to square one,

I cant help at all hunny, only to say I am thinking of you. And I really hope the doc will have some positive information for you tomorrow.

My OH goes to the pain clinic on the 31st, he has put up with dreadful pain for over a year now. Chronic pain can be insufferable.

Before my mums hip op. she was put on some strong opium derivative, this did nothing for the pain, just made her feel very unwell. Then she was put onto Oxinorm (liquid). This helped her alot, but after six months or so, she became tolerant of the drug and it no longer killed the pain. She was then put on to Tramadol tabs which again worked well.

I believe there are a number of opium type drugs on the market. They are all restricted drugs - ie the prescription MUST be hand written by YOUR GP (printed ones will not be accepted by the pharmacy), and YOU need to collect the prescription, or someone with proof that they are your representative.

Some work well with some people, some don't.

They all take several days to build up a pain tolerance within the body. Don't expect an immediate result after one dose.

You are very unlikely to become addicted, as there effectiveness will wear off before that and, if still required, another, different opioid will be prescribed. which is not addictive in the same way.

Hope your pain eases soon.
