You should really put the rooting powder in the lid of the pot, dip your cutting into it and then discard any unused powder.  Cuttings are very susceptible to rotting and diseases can be transferred to them from other cuttings.  Good luck with them.

What are you trying to root?

A lot depends upon what type of cutting you take as to whether you need to use 'rooting powder' in the first place.

This slide show will show you how to take 'basal' cuttings http://tinyurl.com/2s4r46 and if you go to 'C' on my alphabetical index you will find how to various other types of cuttings.

If using rooting powder you only need a very small amount, so dip the end in the powder and shake as much of the excess off as possible.
