Horse Manure
« on: March 12, 2008, 18:09:11 »
I am trying to organise horse manure so my site in swindon.  I know a local farm that does it but it is ages away from me.  ANy ideas that people have tried to get it delivered to the site or someone that delivers.
Thank you

How far is ages away, I have a 20 mile round trip to my lottie and can put another 14 miles on that to go and pick up a load of muck.

The only problem is that I don't drive and would battle to get it to the lottie

Hi.

Have you asked the farmer if he can deliver it? I have it delivered from a smallholder who is probably 2 to 3 miles away and he charges £15 for a massive trailer full. A good bargain but it takes about two days to shovel it to where you want it.

I didn't know that Tom, no wonder they give it away then :)
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

They only pay if they want to get rid of it they are allowed to stockpile it as long as it is kept at least 10 metres from a watercourse and 50 metres from a well, spring or borehole that supplies water for human consumption or for use in dairy farms. They are also allowed to spread it on their land as long as it will offer agricultural benefits.
This is all covered in the 1994 Waste Management Regulations available from the Defra & environment agency sites.

ever since the horrible government of the 80's people (farms etc) seem to have stopped giving anything away, preferring to dump it than give it.

There is a livery yard/riding school a few miles from me and we can bag and take away what we want.

Go to a local stable and fill as many bags as you can (they are delighted to get rid of it)

Hire a van for half a day (£30)

Get a friend to drive it if you can't and transfer the manure.

Voila! a years supply of manure (after rotting down).

The friend may want some fresh veg!

Have you tried either asking on Freecycle for manure or looking in the yellow pages for stables...?

In a thread about manure on another forum - someone in Glasgow said that the council has an allotments officer who knows about supplies of manure - might be worth a phone call?!

How many times do you have to fill the van to get a year's supply? I'm always disheartened to find, after shovelling into bags for ages to fill my (large) car, there's only enough for one or two beds!

I have a small van and fill it once every 2-3 weeks to get a years supply.

I've approached the council and its only council allotments that get the manure. We'd have to pay £1 a sack. Not much but its the principle of the thing, its getting chucked or rotting away anyway.
