rasps etc for a quid
« on: March 07, 2008, 16:40:34 »
The pound shop near me on 'Dumbarton Road' (for all you folk in Glasgow) are selling Gooseberry Hinnomaki and Raspberry Malling Promise not to mention black and red currants for a quid a plant. I'm going to buy loads!

Are these varieties OK?

My only caveat would be that the 'named' varieties are not always what you get.

At £1.00 per plant, what if they are not the named varieties, they are going to produce fruit.  Certainly can't be money wasted.

Hinnomaki is meant to be a good performer. Friend of mine who was in the business recommended it.  NB it is a red gooseberry variety.

If you take cuttings and wait a year they cost nothing and you can look at your neighbours plants and decide on what you like.

Why not wander round the allotment site and make notes of what you see?, Cropping times, disease surceptibility and flavour are a few of the notes you can make.
Go ahead and buy these plants but you may be able to improve on them
