Shallots?
« on: July 14, 2004, 18:59:36 »
I planted some sets of shallots late, they are doing very nicely, how will I know they are ready? will they be ready before the season is up? do I need to bend the tops like normal onions? so many questions  ???
    thanks very much

When?
If you put them in in April, they should be ready in September. Any later is pushing it. Normally they will tell you when they are ready by yellowing. There is no need to bend over either onion or shallot tops. Ask the big growers.
But, if you are not growing them all for storage, lift them whenever they are big enough to suit your immediate need. You should get anything between 8 & 20 bulbs per plant. Lift & dry like onions. = Tim

thank you very much, I planted them the beginning of May  :-[, knowing they were too late but they were so cheap only 50p I had to see what happened with them. I do not expect them to be huge, but as i said they are doing really well. hopefully they will have enough time to ripen, if not I shall eat them straight away breakfast dinner and tea, lol
       thanks again
