We used to use a laser pen to entertain the cats - it was the only thing that made the fat one do some exercisebut we had to stop using it in the end as the other cat became very distressed when we turned it off and stopped playing.

I used to do that with my cat Sweepie, using sunlight reflected off the glass in my watch.  It used to keep him amused for a long time.  Unfortunately he passed away a few years back and my dog Meggie would never be interested in anything like that.
