Contorted hazel
« on: February 07, 2008, 17:15:24 »
Just noticed mine has got three or four straight shoots (suckers?) growing up from the bottom. Can I just cut them off?The plant is only about 3ft high and in a pot.

Treat them like rose suckers, find out where they are coming from and pull them off, leaving as little as possible on the plant. If you cut then any buds left will immediately begin to grow. Leave the suckers on and eventually they will take over the plant and the contorted bit will die out.

Thanks, Palustiris. Do you think putting it into a bigger pot would make it less usceptible to suckering?

If it is pot bound then putting it in a bigger pot would help it grow, but as grafted plants no matter where they are planted they often throw out suckers.
