Maincrop spuds
« on: January 29, 2008, 22:09:07 »
Could anyone recommend to me a few varieties of maincrop potatoes to try this season.I've grown King Edwards,P.F.A,Cara,desiree and Picasso(which I'm going to do again),but I want to try a few more varieties.
My main criteria would be firstly for taste and secondly storage ability.
  Many thanks.

Arran Victory - not a huge yield, but lovely and tasty, and superb for roasties  ;D  Only downside is it needs a long growing season as a late maincrop

I'm trying (Red) Rooster as an early main for the first time this year. Great tasting, Irish in origin. They roast to perfection, chip up great, or boil fluffy and creamy  ;D

The good old red Desiree.
And I just love Valor ... great spud keeps brilliantly and great resistance. ;D

Red Duke of York... good first, esp for baking/jackets roast and mash... we are still eating one sack so they keep well too!

Last year I grew VERITY for the first time. They were large spuds, excellent yield & I only lost the odd one. Appeared very disease resistant, the wet wet wet summer did not bother them. They were like a late variety of kestrel. Stored very well too.

Also not forgetting the always reliable Desiree.   (Pentland Crown was below average I thought, and Cara was a disaster.)
