Potato Day this weekend Gloucestershire
« on: January 15, 2008, 14:23:52 »
I'm hoping to go to this event at the weekend which is held at Dundry's Nursery between Gloucester and Cheltenham http://www.dundrynurseries.co.uk/

I've never been to one of these before and wondered if anyone could offer me any tips, am I right in thinking that you can buy just one spud if wanted??   ???

The website for the nursery has a very good database of potato types, have a look.

Hi GW

I have been to only one before, I ended up buying about 18 different varieties. Yes, you may buy only one of a variety if you so desire. My advice would be to have a clear idea of how many spuds you will have space to plant, divide that number into how many of earlies, second earlies and mains etc, you want to grow. Make sure you write on the bags the name of the spud and whether they are  first early etc- whilst in the shop- or you will never remember!

I also enjoyed trying varieties I had never heard of before although, this year, if I can only find a seed potato day in Berkshire, I mean to reduce the number and plant more of the ones I know work well on my plot.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Zoglet, yes you have been a help. It's interesting to find out before going so I can hopefully make the most of my time there.
Last year I wanted to try several different varieties and could only buy bags of them, I bought 5 different varieties and ended up with enough potatoes to supply most of my allotment site!!!  ::) I'm hoping that by going to a potato day like this I will be able to buy a few different varieties without the huge quantity!!

We went to this today and had a great time. I bought 30 earlies (10 each of Belle de Fontenay, Winston, international kidney) and 20 maincrops (10 Cara 5 pentland Squire 5 Picasso) they were available at 15p each tuber or if you were buying a lot you could buy them by weight.
A really good event with a lovely atmosphere and talks/demonstrations  etc.

We went too Glosterwomble! :)

It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon, probably bought far more than was needed considering I've got some on order elsewhere already! lol

The rest of the nursery was good too, picked up some more seed as well which is always fun.

It was good Cuke, I forgot to say to anyone near by and reading this post that it is on today too. I love the fact that they also sell seed loose like an old fashioned seed merchant, and I have to say I think they were very reasonable with their prices.  ;D

I was at the potato day on Sunday. They had the heritage coloured potatoes Salad blue and Burgandy red. These worked out at about 12p each, which was much cheaper than the prices on some of the catalogues.

The one disappointment I did have about the potato day was the number of listed potatoes they did not have. I would say at least 15-20 varieties were not available as they were not yet released by DEFRA. It was wrote up that these would not be available until after January 25Th. Therefore, this might affect any potato days that are on next weekend as well.

And here was me complaining that Ryton potato days are later than usual. Not this weekend coming, but the weekend after...
