Will my weeds ever stop growing?
« on: December 05, 2007, 14:14:20 »
It's winter. We've had some frost, an inch of snow, rain and some mild weather here in Warwickshire and now some weeds are popping up in the manure-rich areas of my plot.

Anyone else seeing growth yet? I thought I'd have at least a little non-weeding time in the year. I recall seeing/hearing the old advice, if weeds are starting to grow you can sow (or its nearest equivalent) - do you think its worth trying to plant a few things yet?

Some things are quite hardy. Am thinking of the autumn sown peas and broad beans - not all peas and beans are suitable. You could sow some of these. In harsher areas, protect with cloche, perhaps.
There are autumn planting onion and garlic available
Are we still in autumn (the odd leaf still on the tree) or into winter?

It's better to have something growing, keeps the nutrients in the top soil!
