Genrally they need little pruning except to keep an open goblet shaped bush and to remove any dead or very weak stems. In an older specimen it is worth taking out a few of the oldest stems right down to ground level to encourage the shrub to produce new growth. You do this immediately after flowering. To help the plant produce flowers next year you could fed with a general fertiliser now or mulch with well rotted manure. You could also feed again in February with a fertiliser designed for Roses.
Gardening is the great leveller.
