HELP PLEASE
«

Can anyone help with my problem?.
For quite a while i bought a little packet from Tesco, with ingrediants to make a curry, (fresh produce by the way) it contained shallots, garlic, chillies, ginger, and a little piece of something that when one peeled it,,it became orange, & obviously coloured the curry. About 6mths ago the store stopped doing them :o :o (By the way it was for an Indian curry).
Can anyone tell me what it is called and more than that where can i buy it please, my curries are just not the same :'( :'( i do not need to know about the other contents just that orange bit.
Bit of a ramble sorry peeps. Thank you. Rosebud. ;D

You don't have to use the root. You can get turmeric powder in most supermarkets, but it is cheaper in Asian/Indian ones.

I must admit that I've only ever seen it in Indian shops. The root is nicer than the powder - the relationship is a bit like ginger root to powdered dried ginger.
The Hindi word is "haldi" if that helps.

If you don't have any luck finding haldi root locally you can buy it online
HERE
if you buy too much you can dry it then grind it & use as a spice (technically it is a vegetable when it's fresh it only becomes a spice when it's dried) 1 level teaspoon ground is equivalent to 1 inch of fresh root.

I freeze both turmeric and root ginger and just grate off what i need while still frozen then return the root to the freezer. It's really easy to grate when it is frozen.

Another suggestion for the root is galangal. It is a relative of ginger, and has become more popular of late.
I don't know where you are in the UK rosebud, but you may have a Wing Yip oriental supermarket near you. I think the address is
www.wingyip.co.uk
to find out where they have stores. We use the one in Birmingham, and it has a fantastic range of fresh, bottled, tinned and frozen oriental produce.

So is it galangal or turmeric (haldi) that you're wanting, Buds? The tip on freezing the (peeled?) root, freezing & grating as needed might be a good one 8) I always do that with spare ends of ginger & that works well.
