Beans, beans good for the heart.....
« on: October 12, 2007, 16:16:24 »
After reading the threads about Gigandes and Red Kidney Beans I have bought packs of Butter Beans, Red Kidney Beans and Black Turtle Beans. They are they type that you buy to cook, not seed packets but I thought I'd give them a go. If anyone would like to try some as well please pm me and I'll send you a handful of each (or just the ones you want)

Not asking for anything in return as they may not germinate.

I'd like to have a go at the Black Turtle Beans.

Can't see why they wouldn't grow.

I'm trying butterbeans next year. I germinated some 3 year old Tesco-ensis seeds as a test and they sprouted within about 3 days. I suppose these would be climbing ones, which I think get up to 9 feet. Difficult to cope with, what being even more cold sensitive the runners or french, and maybe having to keep them under glass for a long time. More chance of success with dwarf ones treated like squash, potted on til quite big before planting out. Getting seeds from America (I hope)

Also grew black turtle beans. Mine were dwarf. I think they also come as climbers. I planted them late, and they need a long season. Lots of beans but i'll be lucky if they ripen fully. Very neat and tidy plants tho. Try again next year

Why not try cannellini beans? They were great for us. We had some tonight in a stew
