What can I grow under glass next year?
« on: October 10, 2007, 22:53:49 »
This year was my first on the allotment. I was lucky to have been given lots of tomato plants which fruited great. The trouble is, I had too many tomatoes. I gave away lots which is good but next year I plan to grow just enough for the family and use the space for other crops. What should I grow? I have got some peppers in there now but it is getting to the end of the season. Oh by the way, do green peppers always turn red in the end?

No!! It depends upon the variety, e.g they can be yellow;

 Aubergines, cucumbers and Peppers/chillies are the usual alternatives to Tomatoes under glass but there is a huge range of unusual plants to choose from!

okra, tomatillos, physalis, patty pans, courgettes (just in case those outdoors fail), grapes, dwarf fruit, figs, very early or very late salads (when its too cold outside)

Peppers turning red? Sore point this year! Some of ours - even the 'earlies', are not going to make it. And certainly the chillies won't.

However, green peppers have a flavour of their own, & are usually recommended for stuffing. Can't think why! Google is full of green pepper stuff - seldom red.

Cucumbers. In the wet summer this year I had loads of these because they like LOADS of water and were kept warm on frames and a greenhouse.

Also I believe it is possible to grow lettuce all the year round if you have cold frames or a greenhouse.
