Assuming it 's mildew on the leaves, it's strange to find it after such a dry spell.

Clear out any dead stuff & weeds, to keep things airy. Mancozeb & the like is the RHS recommendation. Yes, can affect size.

Check HDRA's advice. If you are not a member, I could mail you a print-out. = Tim

A 10% milk solution has been recommended by others here. I use bicarbonate of soda (3tbs in a gallon of water, with a little dishwashing liquid as a spreader) which is completely effective.
Tim, powdery mildew only proliferates in hot, dry conditions.

Useful tips - noted.

No argument, John - just a RHS quote giving warm, moist conditions as contributory to both powdery & downy mildew. I think I'll opt out. And try to avoid it!!= Tim

I had assumed downy mildew - never assume!!

Anyway check your mail for my offerings. = Tim

PS I note that potassium bicarb is also used as a fungicide - for onions??
