Topic: Where to plant raspberries

Any tips on where I should site a few raspberry plants. I think the best place I have is along a short east facing wall.

You need to be able to pick from both sides.
The roots will send out runners in all directions.
The berries need to dry out quickly after rain.
 
So, choose a free bed where raspberries or other berries haven't been for at least five years, where the ground has been able to settle after being well turned over and where you can leave room for new growth.

Has anyone tried curtailing the root area of rasperries and if so how close to the plants and with what? I am about to replant my Autumn Bliss and I am wondering whether to do what I have more or less successfully done with Lily of the Valley and Jerusalem artichokes, that is to fix a board in the ground to stop the root and stolon growth.

I have put a row of raspberries next to a grass path on the grounds that we mow or strim it regularly, so the runners won't have a chance. Same with J artichokes, sandwiched between grass path and compost heap. My other rasp row is against a more or less permanent path within the allotment. It's not that much trouble to stamp on the runners as I pick the fruit.

Sheets of corrugated steel about a foot deep, pushed right into the ground will keep them in one place, as your boards do.

I'll probably stick some old roofing tiles around the nearest corner.
