Connection Problems

I am madder than a mad thing! a child managed to get through all my antiviral protection and downloaded a trojan called Exploit-ByteVerify >:( I followed all the McAffee instructions to the letter and removed said beast, but now have lost all my access to anything internet related! No e-mail access, no browser nothing. I can see I am connected, but nothing in or out :'( Am having to use the childrens computer to do this) Am I being really obtuse and missing something simple,such as a connection I should have seen? Have broadband on all the time, and this computer is networked from my baby! Any suggestions gratefully recieved.oh and just to rant some more (am on a roll now!) Called freeserve, who advised calling Microsoft, who advised calling my manufacturer (Dell) who after 1/2 an hour talking to someone I couldn't understand as she was from foriegn parts, advised me to call freeserve!!(why can they not use people that speak clearly on help lines???!) Pass the buck or what! DP

Oh DP myheart goes out to ya.What do they get out of doing this?I had 4 viruses in 3 weeks but the detector sorted them out which i think was Gavin advised, AVG.Some sick people about these days

DP, I'm no expert but would try the following:

Right click the IE icon on your desktop and double check the connection properties are as they should be.

Perhaps contact your anti-virus provider and see if they have had any history of a similar thing happening to other users. They may have a simple solution for you.

Try removing and then reloading your broadband connection software, perhaps something has gone haywire from the virus or during the virus removal process.

Sorry I can't offer any specific advise. Hope you get things sorted out, there's nothing more frustrating than a computer that won't do what you want it to do!

PS - If you don't already have a firewall you may consider downloading Zone Alarm - free off the internet and prevents baddies from intruding onto your PC. I also have SpyBot and Ad-Aware, also free off the internet.

I'd go with Jesseveve.  Hope it sorts it out.

Apparently, this virus is spread by infected (spam) e-mails downloaded onto a computer - and exploits

(fancy way of saying that MS m(?)ucked up again?***).  So a couple of hints to add to her list?

- update your anti-virus frequently and regularly (I do it once a week nowadays);
- and make sure that you download Windows security updates.

Like you DP, I am madder than mad today.  Found I could not connect to the net yesterday afternoon.  Still not this morning so rang Freeserve Help Line who then put me on to a number (which was Broadband which I am NOT on).  Tried to get on Broadband a few months ago, only to be told at the last minute that BT could not connect me.  Sent everything back, got a refund for everything. Thought that everything was ok until this problem yesterday.  Phoned the help line, to be told that I had been cut off as I had not paid my Broadband monthly payments :o  After alot of tooing and froing on various numbers I have finally managed to get back on.

Now I have got to wait until BT finally get their act together to be able to go onto Broadband.  Could go to NTL but don't fancy having my garden dug up for the cable.

Thanks all very very much. I agree, so frustating!! How it managed to slip past McAfee I do not know as I am one that regularly updates everything!! ( I also have zonealarm,adaware, and spybot. I swear I spend more time updating than using the darn puter some days ;D)
Will give all your valuable suggestions a go, and will let you know how I get on, hopefully from MY computer!!  DP

OK BB & YP - point taken - I will probably knock that idea on the head (if you'll pardon the pun) ;D

It is very frustrating though when BT can't provide a service to someone like me in Herts.  It's not as if I live out in the sticks - only one of many smallish villages in this area.

Finally solved the problem and as I suspected an easy one! My Zonealarm was acting up and blocking stuff!! Removed it several times and still nada, finally found a bit that hadn't uninstalled, got rid of that and voila!! (Have reinstalled it and working fine :D) Wether the Trojan did something to it I shall never know, just happy to be back on MY computer! ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

HELP! Still having probs with Zonealarm >:( So have removed it yet again, and am now using the computers own firewall for protection! Will this be enough to protect me, and what should I do next, re: getting a decent firewall installed !! :o

Hmmm!  I'm speaking way out of my depth here, Doris.

I don't have a modern version of windows, and I don't have broadband - but I have had my Zonealarm "switch off" while I've been surfing.  My reaction has been to suspect a clever Trojan which knows how to switch off Zonealarm - yes, such nasties exist!  And I've disconnected fast from the internet.

My gut tells me that you've got one of these clever nasties?  It puzzled me that your Zonealarm seems to have been the problem - but, like I say, I'm out of my depth;  I'll try to find out what I can ------------- and hopefully, somebody who swims better than I will come along!
